necrotizing stomatitis,
n an inflammatory disease of the oral cavity characterized by the destruction of epithelium, connective tissue, and papillae. The disease may cause a loss of periodontal attachment and the destruction of bone tissue. In advanced stages, it may lead to cancrum oris (noma) with exposed alveolar bone. It is associated with certain types of necrotizing periodontal disease such as occurs in people with HIV.
