MAIS complex

Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare-scrofulaceum complex. Mycobacterium species that are indistinguishable from each other in regards to surface lipids and antigens, pigment production, biochemical reactions and antibiotic susceptibilities, which are often seen in the same clinical disorders.
 
Clinical findings
Persistent fever, night sweats, chronic diarrhoea, abdominal pain, extrahepatic obstruction, anaemia.
 
Incidence
Uncommon; affects 5–8% of patients with AIDS, especially at CD4 T cells < 0.1 x 109 (US: 100/mm3).
 
Management
Ciproflozacin, clofazimine, ethambutol, rifampicin, amikacin, rifabutin, clarithromycin, azithromycin.
