[-jen′ərā′shənəl] a model of family therapy that focuses on reciprocal role relationships over a period and thus takes a longitudinal approach. The family is viewed as an emotional system in which patterns of interacting and coping, as well as unresolved issues, can be passed down from one generation to the next and can cause stress to the family members onto whom they are projected.
