costus

Chinese medicine
A perennial herb, the root of which contains an alkaloid (saussurine) and essential oils. Costus is analgesic, antiseptic, antispasmodic and carminative, and is used for abdominal discomfort, angina pectoris, crushing chest pain, asthma, body odour, diarrhoea and nausea; it is believed to calm the foetus during pregnancy.
