Etymology: ME, motley, mixed colors
an effect observed in radiographic imaging when the dose of radiation used is reduced to a level at which individual quantum effects can be seen. At very low doses, the number of photons being produced is so small that the statistical variations in x-ray production can be visualized. Also called noise, quantum mottle.
