adverse effect of injection or ingestion of opioids, marked by symptoms of pinpoint pupils, drowsiness, and shallow respiration. Emergency treatment includes gastric lavage, charcoal, and respiratory support. Naloxone is administered intravenously as needed to arouse the patient, and IV fluid is given to support circulation.
