mire (mēr) [Fr.] one of the figures on the arm of an ophthalmometer whose images are reflected on the cornea; measurement of their variations determines the amount of corneal astigmatism.

Any of the test objects on the arm of a keratometer whose image, as reflected on the curved surface of the cornea, is used in calculating the amount of astigmatism.

A pattern used in an optical instrument to guide the observer. Examples: the luminous pattern seen in a keratometer; the two half-circles seen in an applanation tonometer.
