Mineralization The process by which the body uses minerals to build bone structure. Mentioned in: Rickets mineralization [-īzā′shən] Etymology: L, minera + Gk, izein, to cause the addition of any mineral to the body. mineralization, n the bioprecipitation of an inorganic substance. mineralization the addition of mineral matter to the body, especially the skeleton. cutaneous mineralization see calcinosis cutis. dystrophic mineralization see dystrophic calcification. ectopic mineralization the deposition of calcium salts in abnormal locations, e.g. in uremia, hypervitaminosis D. mineralization front the interface between the unmineralized osteoid and the mineralized bone. Called also phosphate ridge. heterotopic mineralization see ectopic mineralization (above). metastatic mineralization calcification of unusual tissues leading to the development of metastatic bone.
