1. any of the membrane-bound, ovoid or spherical, granular cytoplasmic particles containing enzymes and other substances, which originate in the endoplasmic reticulum of vertebrate liver and kidney cells and other cells, and in protozoa, yeast, and many cell types of higher plants.

any of the round membrane-bound granular cytoplasmic particles containing enzymes and other substances, originating in the endoplasmic reticulum of vertebrate liver and kidney cells and other cells and in protozoa, yeast, and many cell types of higher plants. An important type in vertebrates is the peroxisome.
