Etymology: Gk, meta + genein, to produce
the regular alternation of sexual with asexual methods of reproduction within the same species. metagenetic, metagenic, adj.

metagenesis [met″ah-jen´ĕ-sis]
alternation in regular sequence of asexual and sexual methods of reproduction in the same species, as in certain fungi. Called also alternation of generations and heterogenesis.

To assist in their identification, they are divided into nine sections; three sections include species with a Didymella teleomorph, one section includes two species with a Mycosphaerella teleomorph, one section shows a specific metagenetic relation with the genus Leptosphaeria, and another with the genus Pleospora.
Most of the diagenetic concretions (sulphides, carbonates) are unstable in late metagenetic processes.
