African genus of succulent plants in family Aizoaceae; includes M. nodiflorum, M. crystallinum; toxin is soluble oxalates characterized by occurrence of nephrosis, urolithiasis; called also pigface.

There are plenty of true spreading and scrambling types like nasturtiums, mesembryanthemums - ideal for shallow containers - and trailing campanulas.
Nemesia, antirrhinums (snap dragons to you and me) goditia, mesembryanthemums, salvia, marigold, candy tuft and stocks so scented I can smell them down the years.
No longer shall I grow mesembryanthemums, lobelia, nemesia and especially alyssum.
