mercury-based fixative

mercury-based fixative

A tissue fixative that precipitates proteins without binding to them. While providing excellent nuclear detail, mercury-based fixatives are high maintenance, in the sense that they need to be prepared fresh and may need to be washed to remove chromates (if present), or treated with iodine to remove the mercury before routine staining. Overfixation may harden the tissues.
