Voltage-controlled and gated cell membrane pores through which currents of sodium and potassium ions pass in water solution. The movement of these ions through the controlled channels underlie all electrical activity of the nervous system, including the brain and are thus responsible for all behaviour, thinking, and emotional activity. Voltage-gated ion channels have a central pore domain surrounded by voltage-sensor regions.
