Neonatal megakaryocytic hypoplasia is caused by infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV), Toxoplasma, rubella, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and in utero exposure to chlorothiazide diuretics and the oral hypoglycemic tolbutamide.
