measure of central tendency,
(in descriptive statistics) an indication of the middle point of distribution for a particular group. Measures include the mean average score, the median or middle score of distribution, and the mode, the most frequently occurring measure.

In order to answer the second task, a student would have to know how to compute (at least) the mean and median, compare the varying results, and then justify his or her choice of the more appropriate measure of central tendency.
Although means may be a questionable measure of central tendency when distributions are skewed, the present research includes them for purposes of replication and comparison with the previous research.
