The facial ridge was lowered inferiorly at the level of the digastric ridge to allow for unencumbered communication between the mastoid bowl and the meatus (figure 1).
By definition, modified radical mastoidectomy involves the grafting of the middle ear space, which (when disease permits) allows for the sealing of the eustachian tube and prevents the middle ear mucosa from draining into the epithelialized mastoid bowl.
