a substance prepared from Malleomyces mallei (Pseudomonas mallei, now called Burkholderia mallei) that elicits a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction when injected intradermally as a test for glanders.

From personal observation of trucks entering and leaving Gorizia, we know that many horses are never tested at all and, in any event, blood-testing will not pick up some diseases such as mallein, which is endemic in Khazakhstan, from where live horses find their way into the EU via Ukraine and Poland.
