malignant neuroleptic syndromeA life-threatening condition that affects < 1% of patients exposed to neuroleptics (e.g., phenothiazine, butyrophenones).
Fever, autonomic instability, muscle rigidity, tremor, cognitive changes, encephalopathy, delirium, and myoglobinuria, which start 1–3 days after beginning neuroleptic agents, including antipsychotics or antidepressants.
Increased CK, leukocytosis.
Stop drugs, antipyretics, cooling blankets, dantrolene, bromocriptine.
