Leukopenia A condition in which the number of leukocytes circulating in the blood is abnormally low and which is most commonly due to a decreased production of new cells in conjunction with various infectious diseases or as a reaction to various drugs or other chemicals. leukopenia (lōōˈ·k n a condition characterized by the atypical decrease in circulating white blood cells (less than 5000 cells per cubic millimeter). The condition may be related to radiation poisoning, a reaction to a drug, or other pathologic conditions. Also called leucocytopenia. leukopenia (loo´kōpē´nē n a decrease in the normal number of white blood cells in the circulating blood. Various lower limits are given; e.g., leukopenia signifies less than 4000 white blood cells per cubic millimeter. See also lymphocytopenia; neutropenia. leukopenia reduction of the number of leukocytes in the blood. It is a common manifestation of a number of diseases, especially those caused by viruses, by a severe inflammatory lesion that draws off large numbers of leukocytes, a consumption leukopenia, and by toxins which depress bone marrow function.
