insurance coverage designed to offset the costs of prolonged or catastrophic illness and injury. Most major medical insurance policies are written to pay a certain percentage of costs up to a predetermined figure, beyond which payment is in full up to a maximum amount, at which point payment ceases. Many require the insured to pay a specified initial, or deductible, amount.
