Mary Bly's essay focuses more narrowly on bawdy puns spo ken by virgins about their own maidenheads, a culturally transgressive practice that she sees Shakespeare pioneering--daringly yet quite successfully--with Juliet but which is later parodied for comic effect in plays by Henry Porter and Thomas Dekker.
Hal responds, "Why then, it is like if there come a hot June, and this civil buffeting hold, we shall buy maidenheads as they buy hob-nails, by the hundreds" (57-59).
