magnesium alginate

the magnesium salt of alginic acid, administered orally as a component of an antacid in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease. It combines with gastric acid to form a viscous gel, which floats on top of the gastric contents and acts as a physical barrier to reflux.

magnesium alginate

A drug used to treat dyspepsia and heartburn. Brand names of preparations containing it are Algicon and Gaviscon Infant.
