respiratory care equipment that allows the patient to inhale some ambient air along with the delivered oxygen. As the patient's ventilatory pattern changes, different amounts of air are mixed with the constant flow of oxygen, thus causing the inspired oxygen concentration to vary. Also called variable-performance oxygen delivery system.
