single or multiple longitudinal pigmented nail plate bands; normal variant (e.g. 80% of African American adults; 15% of Japanese adults); also associated with repeated proximal nail trauma (e.g. picking/biting nail), chronic local inflammation (e.g. lichen planus), endocrine disturbances (e.g. Addison's disease, pregnancy, human immunodeficiency virus [HIV] infection), or local melanocytic naevus; differential diagnoses must exclude acral (malignant) melanoma of nail matrix
