locum /lo·cum/ (lo´kum) [L.] place. locum te´nens , locum te´nent a practitioner who temporarily takes the place of another. locum tenens [lō′kəm ten′ənz] Etymology: L, locus, place, tenere, to hold a physician who is contacted to work on a temporary basis to fill in for a vacancy, vacation, or extended leave. locum tenens a replacement for an absent veterinarian whose responsibility is to provide exactly the same services and at the same standard as those provided by the absentee. locum tenens A term for either 1.
