Cardiology A widely accepted postulate that hyperlipidemia–eg, cholesterol, and to a lesser degree, other lipids in the circulation is responsible for CAD, the major cause of death in the US, levels which, when altered by dietary or pharmacologic manipulation, ↓ risk of ASHD-related morbidity. 19) The Lipid Hypothesis The lipid hypothesis, the label for the diet-heart connection that attributes heart disease to consumption of animal fats, has a long history.
In the late 1950's, a researcher named Ancel Keys proposed the lipid hypothesis, in which a direct relationship is cited between the amount of saturated fat and dietary cholesterol we consume and the incidence of coronary heart disease.
