An antibiotic derived from cultures of the bacterium Streptomyces lincolnensis and used in the treatment of certain penicillin-resistant infections.

lincomycin hydrochloride
[lin′kəmī′sin]
a macrolide antibiotic.
indications It is prescribed in the treatment of certain infections caused by susceptible bacteria, especially streptococci and staphylococci.
contraindications Known hypersensitivity to this drug or to clindamycin prohibits its use.
adverse effects Among the more serious adverse effects are blood disorders, diarrhea, and the development of life-threatening pseudomembranous colitis caused by superinfection.
