dermis [der´mis]
the true skin; the fibrous inner layer of the skin just beneath the epidermis, derived from the embryonic mesoderm, varying from 0.05 cm to 0.3 cm in thickness, well supplied with nerves and blood vessels and containing hair roots, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands; on the palms and soles the dermis bears ridges whose arrangement in whorls and loops is unique to the individual. Called also corium. adj., adj der´mal, der´mic.

coronary corium
specialized corium at the coronary band of ungulates providing nourishment via papillae which extend into the hoof. Separated from the skin by the perioplic corium.
cuneal corium
corium of the frog of the equine hoof.
foot corium
see cuneal corium (above).
laminar corium
corium of the sensitive laminae of the hoof. Bears laminae which interdigitate with lamellae of the hoof wall. Supplies nutrition to the horn and to the white zone of interlamellar horn.
papillary corium
see coronary corium (above).
perioplic corium
continuous with the corium of the skin, forming a narrow band between the skin and the coronary corium.
solear corium
the corium of the sole of the foot, supporting the horn of the sole.
