Etymology: Gk, lagos, hare, ophthalmos, eye
an abnormal condition in which an eye may not be fully closed because of a neurologic, muscular, or mechanical disorder.

lagophthalmos [lag″of-thal´mos]
inability to shut the eyes completely.

lagophthalmos
incomplete or defective closure of the eyelids.

geriatric lagophthalmos
may occur as a result of facial neuropathy or hypothyroidism.
lagophthalmos keratitis
see exposure keratitis.

lagophthalmos
Failure of the upper eyelid to close the eye completely. During sleep, about one-third of the population has a slight lagophthalmos. See ectropion; exposure keratopathy.
