knuckle /knuck·le/ (nuk´'l) the dorsal aspect of any phalangeal joint, or any similarly bent structure.

n.
1. The prominence of the dorsal aspect of a joint of a finger, especially of one of the joints that connect the fingers to the hand.
2. A rounded protuberance formed by the bones in a joint.
3. A kink or loop of intestine, as in a hernia.

the dorsal aspect of any interphalangeal joint, but especially of the metacarpophalangeal joints of the flexed fingers. By extension the term is sometimes applied to any anatomic structure of similar appearance, such as an extruded loop of intestine in a hernia.
