keel, (in prosthetics) a device in a stored-energy foot prosthesis that bends the foot upward when weight is applied to the toe. See also carina, Seattle Foot, stored-energy foot. keel 1. the ventrally directed large surface of the bird's sternum, the site of attachment of the major muscles of flight.
