juxtamedullary nephron

one whose proximal convoluted tubule is close to the corticomedullary border and whose loop of Henle extends deep into the renal medulla.

Juxtamedullary nephrons (see Figure 1) have longer loops of Henle that extend to the deep layers of the inner medulla, and their efferent arterioles form both a network of peritubular capillaries and a series of vascular loops called the vasa recta.
In the medulla, these capillaries, called the vasa recta, form long straight loops that run parallel to the loops of Henle of the juxtamedullary nephrons and play an important role in the concentration and dilution of urine.
The juxtamedullary nephrons make up the remaining 15% of the nephrons.
