Vertical deceleration injury Trauma medicine Blunt trauma that follows jumping or falling from heights, usually > 5 stories Clinical Injury severity score is 41–predicted survival, 50%; actual survival is less; all had multiple fractures–eg, 'ring fracture' of skull base, separating the rim of the foramen magnum from the rest of the base and compression fractures of vertebrae, both of which occur when the victim lands on the feet or buttocks; many also have coup and/or contrecoup injuries of the brain; over¹⁄₂ arrive at the ER in shock; most have angiographic evidence of retroperitoneal hemorrhage.
