Experiments on muscle fibers in solutions of different ionic strength provide further evidence that the stiffness of relaxed fibers stems from interfilament connections.
Many of the major soil-bound matal ions that normally will not dissolve in water -- including magnesium, calcium and aluminum -- will go into solution only if the pH is in the right acidic range and the ionic strength is high enough.
