Aortic rings without endothelium were prepared by gently rubbing the intimal surface of the aortic rings with a wooden stick. They represent an intimal or mural form made up of proliferating pleomorphic cells that can occur in large arteries such as the aorta. The earliest lesions of atherogenesis consist of arterial intimal accumulations of foam cells (primarily lipid-laden macrophages) and T lymphocytes intermixed with smooth muscle cells (7). |
