glossitis area´ta exfoliati´va , benign migratory glossitis an inflammatory disease of the tongue characterized by multiple annular areas of desquamation of the filiform papillae, presenting as reddish lesions outlined in yellow that shift from area to area every few days.

median rhomboid glossitis a congenital anomaly of the tongue, with a reddish patch or plaque on the midline of the dorsal surface.

Etymology: Gk, glossa, tongue, itis

inflammation of the tongue. Acute glossitis, characterized by swelling, intense pain that may be referred to the ears, salivation, fever, and enlarged regional lymph nodes, may develop during an infectious disease or after a burn, bite, or other injury. Glossitis in which there is smooth atrophy of the surface and edges of the tongue is seen in pernicious anemia. Glossitis in which irregular, bright red patches appear on the tip or sides of the tongue (Moeller's glossitis) occurs in middle-aged people, chiefly women. The condition causes pain or a burning sensation and sensitivity to hot or spicy foods; it often resists treatment. In congenital glossitis there is a flat or slightly elevated patch or plaque anterior to the circumvallate papillae in the midline of the dorsal surface of the tongue.

median rhomboid glossitis a congenital disorder of noninflammatory origin, characterized by a somewhat rhomboid reddish, smooth, and shiny lesion with some opalescent spots, occurring at about the middle third of the dorsal surface of the tongue.

glossitis, atrophic,

n (bald tongue, smooth tongue) the atrophy of the glossal papillae, resulting in a smooth tongue. The tongue may be pallid or erythematous and may appear small or enlarged. It may be associated with anemias, pellagra, vitamin B complex deficiencies, sprue, or other systemic diseases or may be local in origin. Because atrophy may be one phase, and circumscribed, painful, glossal excoriations may be another phase of one or more of the same systemic disease(s), much confusion in terminology has arisen (e.g., Moeller's glossitis; Hunter's glossitis; slick, glazed, varnished, glossy, or bald tongue; chronic superficial erythematous glossitis; glossodynia exfoliativa; beefy tongue; and pellagrous glossitis).
