in·ter·sti·tial growth

growth from a number of different centers within an area; in contrast with appositional growth, it can occur only when the materials involved are nonrigid, such as cartilage.

interstitial growth

an increase in size by hyperplasia or hypertrophy within the interior of a part or structure that is already formed. Compare appositional growth.
