intermittent mandatory ventilation
n. Abbr. IMV
Mechanical application of positive pressure at a determined frequency to the airway so as to increase tidal volume.

intermittent mandatory ventilation (IMV),
a mode of mechanical ventilation in which the patient is allowed to breathe independently except during certain prescribed intervals, when a ventilator delivers a breath either under positive pressure or in a measured volume. Compare intermittent positive-pressure breathing. See also respiratory therapy.
