1. Instrument designed to measure the wavelength of light, the refractive index of a medium, as well as the flatness, thickness, the quality of optical surfaces, etc. The interferometer is based on the phenomenon of interference between two coherent beams of light. 2. Name given to several types of clinical maxwellian view system used to measure visual acuity. See clinical maxwellian view system.
