In Taiwan, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is classified as a severe disease. As a chronic illness, both insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) can develop into long-term disabling conditions by causing significant complications in major bodily systems that can result in nerve damage, foot ulcers, and circulation, vision, kidney, and heart problems (Hamburg & Inoff, 1983; Johnson, 1995). Type 1 used to be known as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or juvenile diabetes. |
