insecticide [insek′tisīd] a chemical agent that kills insects. insecticide an agent that kills insects. May be applied by pour-on technique, dipping, spraydip, jetting, dusting powders. Insecticides come in a wide variety of chemical compounds. See also pyrethroids, rotenone, derris, chlorinated hydrocarbons, organophosphorus compound, arsenical, carbamates, triazines. The toxicity of an insecticidal preparation may be greatly altered by the agents used as emulsifiers and solvents. Called also pesticide. insecticide resistance insects exposed to one insecticide for long periods may develop a resistance to it and suffer no ill-effects when it is applied.
