Harland's work is part of a broad scholarly movement that is currently using the analysis of large quantities of inscriptional evidence to challenge long-held positions which are essentially based on the classical education tradition with its emphasis on literary and juridical sources.
This practice renders existing knowledge of African art problematic, precisely because the forms attributed to them in the discourse and interpreted as their canonical forms are often documents of specific historical perception locked into the inscriptional mode of Western production of knowledge.
Three appendixes--Personal Names in the Book of Jeremiah: Inscriptional Evidence (the longest entry is about the 7th/6th century Baruch ben Neriah ben Mahseiah seal impression), the Dramatis Personae in the Book of Jeremiah, and Haplagrophy in Jeremiah 1-20--as well as an Author Index and a Scripture Index round out the readable volume.
