synovitis /syno·vi·tis/ (sin″o-vi´tis) inflammation of a synovial membrane, usually painful, particularly on motion, and characterized by fluctuating swelling, due to effusion in a synovial sac. dry synovitis , synovitis sic´ca that with little effusion. simple synovitis that with clear or but slightly turbid effusion. tendinous synovitis tenosynovitis. villonodular synovitis proliferation of synovial tissue, especially of the knee joint, composed of synovial villi and fibrous nodules infiltrated by giant cells and macrophages.
Synovitis Inflammation of the synovium, a membrane found inside joints. Mentioned in: Familial Mediterranean Fever synovitis [sin′əvī′tis] an inflammatory condition of the synovial membrane of a joint as the result of an aseptic wound or a traumatic injury, such as a sprain or severe strain. The knee is most commonly affected. Fluid accumulates around the capsule; the joint is swollen, tender, and painful; and motion is restricted.
