indirect transfusion

transfusion /trans·fu·sion/ (-fu´zhun) the introduction of whole blood or blood components directly into the bloodstream.
direct transfusion  immediate t.
exchange transfusion  repetitive withdrawal of small amounts of blood and replacement with donor blood, until a large proportion of the original volume has been replaced.
immediate transfusion  transfer of blood directly from a vessel of the donor to a vessel of the recipient.
indirect transfusion , mediate transfusion introduction of blood which has been stored in a suitable container after withdrawal from the donor.
placental transfusion  return to an infant after birth, through the intact umbilical cord, of the blood contained in the placenta.
replacement transfusion , substitution transfusion exchange t.
twin-to-twin transfusion  an intrauterine abnormality of fetal circulation in monozygotic twins, in which blood is shunted directly from one twin to the other.

Etymology: L, in + directus, straight, transfundere, to pour through
the transfusion of blood to a recipient after the donor blood has been prepared with anticoagulants, defibrinating agents, or other substances, as opposed to direct transfusion of blood from donor to recipient.
