There are other types of immune hemolytic anemias where the cause may result from an underlying disease or medication. When anemia is present, immune hemolytic anemia must be included in the differential. Drug-induced immune hemolytic anemia occurs when drugs including penicillin, cephalosporin, thiazide diuretics and NSAIDs interact with the red blood cell membrane, causing the cell to become antigenic. |
