immune complex–mediated hyper-sensitivity, n a type-3 hypersen-sitivity reaction in which exposure to an antigen causes a delayed re-sponse. Antibodies (IgG, IGA, or IgM) combine with antigens to form complexes in tissues, thus causing the release of proinflammatory chemicals and immunologically active cells that damage those tissues and result in autoimmune disorders (rheumatic fever, rheumatoid arthritis), Arthus reaction, and serum sickness. It may take several hours or days for this response to develop. How to thank TFD for its existence?
