immediate exclusion

immediate exclusion

A National Clinical Assessment Service (NCAS) euphemism for the immediate suspension of a doctor or dentist (for up to two weeks) when: there has been a critical incident with serious allegations made; there is alleged misconduct; there is concern about a practitioner’s capability; there has been a breakdown in relationships between a colleague and the rest of the team; the presence of the practitioner is likely to hinder the investigation; or the complexity of the issues warrant further detailed investigation before a decision can be made.

Immediate exclusion allows a more measured consideration to be undertaken. The 2-week period should be used to carry out a preliminary situation analysis, to contact the NCAS for advice and to convene a case conference.
