1. the ventrolateral portion of a myotome, innervated by an anterior ramus of a spinal nerve.
2. the lateral plate of mesoderm that develops into the walls of the body cavities.

2. The somatic and splanchnic layers of the lateral mesoderm that give rise to the lining of the celom.
