hypoglossal [-glos′əl] Etymology: Gk, hypo, under, glossa, tongue pertaining to nerves or other structures under the tongue. hypoglossal situated beneath the tongue, as the hypoglossal nerve. hypoglossal cord the large aggregation of myogenic cells which migrates from somites 3-5 to a location ventral to the pharynx, and forms the tongue. hypoglossal nerve paralysis causes difficulty in prehension, deglutition and mastication.
