Etymology: Gk, hyper, excess, trophe, nourishment; AS, heorte
an increase in the size of the heart resulting from enlargement of the heart muscle, but without an increase in the capacity of the heart chambers. It is a compensatory mechanism in heart failure associated with increased afterload, such as that caused by hypertension or aortic stenosis.
